Five Mistakes

Book one of the Five Mistakes series

Five mistakes you're making in your marriage

She has already told you what is wrong. Probably more than once. The problem is she told you in a language you were not listening in, and by the time most men learn to hear it, she has stopped saying it.

This is not a book about being a better listener or scheduling more date nights. It is five specific things you are almost certainly doing right now, why each one feels reasonable from the inside, what it is quietly costing you, and exactly what to do instead.

If you are reading this,
something is off

Maybe it is loud. Maybe there is a conversation you keep almost having. Or maybe nothing is technically wrong at all, which is somehow worse, because you cannot point at anything and it still feels like you are living with a polite roommate who used to be in love with you.

Here is what I got wrong for a long time. I thought a marriage in trouble was a marriage with a problem. Find the problem, fix the problem, marriage repaired. I approached my wife the way I approached a business with bad numbers.

That is not what was happening. There was no single problem. There were five ordinary habits, each one of them defensible on its own, that added up over years into a woman who stopped bringing things to me because she had learned what happened when she did.

Nobody has an affair on page one. It goes quiet first.

What's inside

The five

Each one gets a chapter. What it looks like from the outside, why you keep doing it, what it is actually costing you, the fix, and one thing to do before the end of the week.

1

You are fixing when she needs a witness

She brings you something hard. You start solving it inside of nine seconds, because solving is how you show love. What she hears is that her feeling was an inconvenience you wanted closed. Do this often enough and she stops bringing you things.

2

You call it keeping the peace

You go quiet to stop the fight getting worse. From inside your own head this is maturity. From where she is standing, the person she loves just left the room without moving. Withdrawal does not read as calm. It reads as abandonment.

3

You turned your marriage into a logistics company

Every conversation is now a status update. Who has the kids, what is thawing, when is the appointment. You are running a small business together very efficiently. You have not had a conversation neither of you needed to have in about two years.

4

You made her your entire life

You let your friendships go, because you were busy and she was enough. Now she is your wife, your best friend, your only confidant, and your whole support system. That is not romantic. That is a load-bearing wall you built out of one person.

5

You stopped pursuing her when she said yes

You competed hard to win her and then filed the matter as closed. The attention, the curiosity, the effort, all of it was the audition. She did not marry you to end the pursuit. She married you because of it.

Then the thirty day plan

All five fixes sequenced into something you can actually start on a Monday, one small move at a time, without announcing to your wife that you have read a book about her.

Fair warning

Who this is not for

If there is abuse in your house, in either direction, this book is the wrong tool and you should be talking to a professional today, not reading me.

If you want to be told this is her fault, I am going to disappoint you. Every chapter is about what you are doing, because that is the only half of it you control.

And if you are looking for a therapist, I am not one. I am a man who got this wrong for years, worked out why, and wrote down what would have saved me.

The author

Clinton Wasylishen

I have built businesses, raced Ironman, and raised sons. I have also been divorced, which is the credential that actually matters for this particular book.

I did not write this because I got it right. I wrote it because I got it wrong slowly enough to watch it happen and still could not stop myself, and because I have since sat with enough men in the same spot to know almost none of us can see it from the inside.
